Champions for Change in Athens
Wrestling for Peace (W4P), in strategic partnership with SportsLife and in collaboration with EuroRelief, Hellenic Ministries, and Leven, was honored to stand in solidarity with refugee and Roma communities during a recent initiative in Athens, Greece. This visit marked a significant step in our ongoing mission to bring dignity, empowerment, and hope to those navigating life at the margins.
Meeting Immediate Needs with Long-Term Impact
As part of our contribution, Wrestling for Peace and SportsLife provided a year’s worth of school supplies to support Roma children, many of whom are attending formal education for the first time. In addition, a substantial financial donation was made to support the operations of the Hellenic Ministries refugee center located in the heart of Athens. These combined efforts are not only meeting practical needs but also laying the foundation for long-term educational and social transformation.
Learning from Local Leaders
During the visit, W4P ambassadors were deeply encouraged by a conversation with Nick Niavradakis, Chief Operating Officer of Hellenic Ministries, who provided an in-depth overview of the organization’s expansive humanitarian work across Greece. From emergency relief to sustainable development, their comprehensive approach to serving vulnerable populations reflects a deep-rooted commitment to justice and compassion.
The delegation also had the privilege of meeting Luciana Oliveira, Director of the Athens Educational Community Center. Her passionate testimony about the ongoing work with Roma families highlighted the challenges these communities face—from systemic discrimination to educational exclusion. Luciana shared how the Center is actively working to dismantle these barriers by enrolling nearly 300 Roma children in local schools—a life-changing milestone for many families. W4P’s school supply donation will equip these children with the necessary tools to fully engage in their learning and thrive academically.
A Safe Haven for Refugees
At the refugee center, W4P witnessed firsthand the tangible support being offered daily to displaced families from a variety of backgrounds, including Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and sub-Saharan Africa. The center provides warm meals, clothing, hygiene kits, and multilingual assistance in Greek, Farsi, Arabic, and Ukrainian.
Beyond meeting physical needs, the center serves as a holistic support system—offering language classes, children’s programming, trauma counseling, and faith-based care. This is more than a shelter—it’s a place of restoration, where broken lives begin to heal and new futures take root. Many of the families we met have endured unimaginable hardship, and yet, through the compassionate work of these ministries and the support of partners like Wrestling for Peace, they are finding hope again.
Building Bridges Through Sport and Service
Wrestling for Peace believes that true peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but the active presence of love, justice, and service. Through the ongoing partnership with SportsLife and the unwavering commitment of local Athenian organizations, lives are being transformed—not only through immediate aid but through the creation of pathways to education, integration, and community belonging.
W4P ambassadors left Athens inspired by stories of courage and resilience—of children stepping into classrooms for the first time, of families reclaiming dignity after displacement, and of local leaders faithfully serving day after day in challenging circumstances. But the work doesn’t end here. Wrestling for Peace remains deeply committed to walking alongside refugee and marginalized communities in Greece and beyond.
W4P would love to partner with you to end cycles of poverty and displacement. Together we can continue to sow seeds of peace through education, empowerment, and presence. When we serve together, hope is not only possible, it is inevitable.
