Building Legacy Beyond the Podium

Bratislava, Slovakia

As Slovakia prepares to host the upcoming U20 World Wrestling Championships in August 2026, Wrestling for Peace is shaping a vision that extends far beyond competition. In partnership with Team USA and Team Slovakia, the Wrestling for Peace (W4P) Global Campaign will highlight the Women’s freestyle teams from both nations, coming together not only as competitors, but as partners in service.

These young athletes will step beyond the mat and into the community, working side by side to support and uplift children in need throughout Bratislava. Their presence will represent something larger than sport, a demonstration that strength is not only measured in performance, but in compassion and leadership.

At the center of this initiative is Wrestling for Peace Slovakian Ambassador, Jozef Lohyňa, whose life and career embody the values this movement seeks to inspire. A four time Olympian, Lohyňa’s journey reflects perseverance at the highest level. After qualifying for the 1984 Summer Olympics, he was unable to compete due to the 1984 Summer Olympics boycott, a moment that could have defined his career. Instead, it strengthened his resolve.

Lohyňa went on to compete in three Olympic Games, earning bronze at the 1988 Summer Olympics, and later capturing a World Championship title in 1990 along with additional World medals. Twice selected as a flag bearer at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics, he became a symbol of leadership and national pride. Now, his impact continues in a new role.

As a W4P Ambassador, Lohyňa represents a commitment to purpose beyond the podium. His leadership reinforces a belief that the true value of wrestling lies not only in achievement, but in the character it builds and the lives it influences. That belief will be carried forward by Team USA and Team Slovakia. Together, they will demonstrate how sport can unite across cultures, building friendships and shared purpose.

Across Bratislava, local wrestling clubs are preparing to welcome the energy and inspiration that comes with a global event. For young athletes, the opportunity to connect with these competitors will offer more than motivation. It will provide a living example of leadership in action.

As the U20 World Championships approach, Bratislava stands ready to host more than a tournament. It will be a gathering of purpose, strengthened by partnership and guided by the example of athletes committed to something greater than themselves.

The assignment is clear. Inspire youth. Build resilience. Create opportunity. Strengthen unity.

This is Wrestling for Peace.
